Whether or not you choose to cover up acne with foundation, here’s some good news from dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD: “wearing foundation is not intrinsically bad for acne prone skin.” So, if you do want to conceal a breakout—no shame. “We know that acne can affect self-esteem, so I encourage my patients to wear makeup if it makes them more comfortable covering up breakouts and hyperpigmentation until they are clear and no longer experiencing acne,” says Marchbein.
As foundation is a product that sits on the skin all day, Dr. Marchbein recommends acne-prone skin types seek oil-free and noncomedogenic formulas—which prevent pores from getting clogged. She’s especially fond of formulas that pack a skincare punch on top of makeup benefits. “Look for ones with added skin benefits, such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and skin-brightening ingredients, and sun protection," she says, noting that some of these ingredients can also help soothe redness and irritation and help address underlying causes of acne.
You should also be conscious of how you're applying foundation, as your tools (brushes, beauty blenders, etc.) need to be cleaned on the regular to prevent acne.
“Make sure to clean your brushes at least weekly to prevent bacterial contamination and oil buildup, which can contribute to further breakouts,” Marchbein says.
Another reminder: It’s absolutely crucial not to sleep in your makeup—especially for the sake of maintaining a clear complexion. “Sleeping with makeup on or forgetting to rinse your face before bed is a big no-no, as it can cause major breakouts, including painful cysts,” Marchbein says. When you wash your face, you remove makeup, dirt, and pollutants that have accumulated on your skin during the day—a very good thing.

The CC cream is undoubtedly one of the hero products—with SPF 50, this full-coverage cream acts like a pore-blurring primer andanti-aging serum (there’s collagen, peptides, and hyaluronic acid).
